Gino Marchetti (January 16, 1933 – May 28, 2019) was an American professional football player who played as a defensive end in the National Football League (NFL). He is best known for his tenure with the Baltimore/Indianapolis Colts and his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Overview
Born in Ansonia, Connecticut, Marchetti attended the University of Notre Dame, where he played college football for the Fighting Irish. After graduating, he was selected in the 23rd round of the 1955 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Colts. He played for the Colts from 1955 to 1966, contributing to two NFL championship victories (1958, 1959) and the 1968 Super Bowl III championship after the franchise had moved to Indianapolis. Over his 13‑season career, Marchetta recorded 91 quarterback sacks (unofficial, as sacks were not an official statistic until 1982) and earned eight Pro Bowl selections. He was named to the NFL 1950s All‑Decade Team and the All‑Pro team multiple times. In 1986, he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Following his playing career, Marchetti worked as a commercial real‑estate broker and remained involved with the Colts organization in various alumni capacities. He passed away in 2019 at the age of 86.
