Gimo Air Base is a former military airfield located near the town of Gimo in Uppsala County, Sweden. It is no longer in active military use and is currently known as Lunda flygfält (Lunda Airfield).
History and Background The airfield was established in 1965 as a reserve roadbase under the Swedish Air Force's Bas 60 system during the Cold War. It was designed to serve as a dispersal base for jet aircraft, including fighters, attack planes, and reconnaissance aircraft, in wartime scenarios.
Current Status The facility is now a public airfield operated by Alliansen för Lunda flygfält. Of the original 2,000-metre (6,600 ft) runway, only 800 metres (2,600 ft) of asphalt remains available for aircraft use. The airfield is most commonly used for various motorsport events, though aircraft may still operate from it with prior permission from the operator.
