Gilbert Py

Gilbert Py (born 17 February 1965) is a French operatic tenor renowned for his performances in the dramatic repertoire, particularly the works of Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. He has appeared at major international opera houses and festivals, gaining recognition for his powerful vocal timbre and stage presence.

Early life and education
Gilbert Py was born in Panevėžys, Lithuania, to a family of French descent. He moved to France during his childhood and began vocal studies at the Conservatoire de Bordeaux, later continuing at the Conservatoire de Paris under the tutelage of prominent French vocal coaches.

Career
Py made his professional operatic debut in the late 1980s, initially performing in secondary roles at regional French theaters. His breakthrough came in the early 1990s when he was cast as Siegmund in Wagner’s Die Walküre at the Bayreuth Festival, a role that established him as a leading dramatic tenor.

Subsequent engagements have included:

  • Bayreuth Festival – Repeated appearances as Siegmund, as well as roles such as Tristan in Tristan und Isolde and the title role in Parsifal.
  • Deutsche Oper Berlin – Notable performances of the title role in Tannhäuser and the Emperor in Die Frau ohne Schatten (Strauss).
  • Metropolitan Opera, New York – Debut as Siegmund in 2005, later returning as Svatopluk in The Makropulos Case and as the Prince in Rusalka.
  • Opéra National de Paris – Interpretations of Faust in Gounod’s Faust and the title role in Verdi’s Otello.

In addition to his Wagnerian repertoire, Py has performed leading roles in French operas, including Samson in Samson et Dalila (Saint‑Saëns) and the title role in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette. He is also noted for his interpretations of Italian dramatic tenor roles such as the title character in Verdi’s Don Carlos.
