Gil Brother (born Jaime Gil da Costa; 29 July 1957 – 3 December 2023) was a Brazilian actor, humorist, dancer, and YouTuber. He gained prominence as a member of the comedy troupe Hermes & Renato from 2002 to 2008, where his off‑beat persona, frequent use of profanity, and malapropisms made him a cult figure in Brazilian popular culture.
Born in Petrópolis, Rio de Janeña, Costa grew up in poverty and worked various informal jobs before developing an interest in dancing and street performance. His nickname “Brother Away” derived from his habit of shouting “Away!” while dancing, which later became a catchphrase.
After being discovered by Hermes & Renato while washing cars, he was invited to appear in an MTV Brasil interstitial segment, leading to a full‑time role in the troupe. He created several recurring sketches, most notably the lawyer “Dr. Gilmar” and the cooking‑show parody “Cozinha do Away.” He left the group in 2008 amid disputes over compensation and briefly sued the troupe; the lawsuit did not proceed.
In the 2010s Gil Brother transitioned to online media, launching the YouTube channel “Canal Away.” He appeared in Brazilian films such as Copa de Elite (2014) and made guest appearances in music videos and television programs. He also narrated a McDonald’s commercial in 2020.
Gil Brother suffered a stroke in May 2023 and died on 3 December 2023 in Rio de Janeña at the age of 66. He is interred at Cemitério de Santo Aleixo in Magé, Rio de Janeña.
