Gert Voss (11 October 1941 – 13 July 2007) was an Austrian actor renowned for his work in theatre, film, and television. He is particularly noted for his long association with the Burgtheater in Vienna, where he performed leading roles in classic and contemporary productions.
Early life and education
Gert Voss was born in Shanghai, China, to Austrian parents who were expatriates during World War II. After the war, his family returned to Austria, where he grew up in the city of Linz. Voss pursued dramatic training at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna, completing his studies in the early 1960s.
Theatrical career
Voss began his professional stage career at the Burgtheater in 1969, quickly establishing himself as a versatile performer. Over the ensuing decades, he played a wide range of leading roles, including:
- Shakespearean characters such as Hamlet and King Lear.
- Classic German-language roles, notably Mephistopheles in Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Faust and the title character in Friedrich Schiller’s William Tell.
