Gerry Sweeney

Gerry Sweeney (born 18 June 1957) is an Irish former professional footballer who played as a defender. He is best known for his time at Bristol City and for representing the Republic of Ireland national team.

Early Career

Sweeney began his career in his native Ireland with Shamrock Rovers. His performances there attracted attention from clubs across the Irish Sea.

Club Career

Sweeney moved to England in 1977, joining Bristol City. He quickly established himself as a reliable and tough-tackling defender. He was a key part of the Bristol City squad during a significant period in their history, which included their time in the First Division (then the top tier of English football) and the subsequent turbulent years that saw the club experience multiple relegations. Sweeney made over 200 league appearances for Bristol City across various divisions, becoming a popular figure among the fans.

After leaving Bristol City, he had spells with York City and Darlington before finishing his playing career in non-league football.

International Career

Gerry Sweeney represented the Republic of Ireland at various youth levels before making his senior international debut. He earned 17 caps for the Republic of Ireland national team between 1977 and 1980, featuring in European Championship and World Cup qualifiers, and friendly matches.

Post-Playing Career

Following his retirement from playing, Sweeney remained involved in football, often taking up coaching or youth development roles, including a return to Bristol City in various capacities.
