Gerry McGeough
Gerry McGeough is a former Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) volunteer, political activist, and writer. He is known for his involvement in [[The Troubles]], his extradition from the [[United States]] to [[Northern Ireland]], and subsequent imprisonment for historical paramilitary offences, as well as his later political activism within [[Irish republicanism]].
Early Life and IRA Activity
Born in [[Brantry]], near [[Dungannon]], [[County Tyrone]], Northern Ireland, McGeough became involved with the [[Provisional Irish Republican Army|IRA]] during The Troubles. His activities led to his arrest in [[Germany]] in 1978 following an attack on [[British Army]] soldiers. He was subsequently convicted and served a prison sentence there. After his release, he relocated to the United States.
Extradition and Imprisonment
In 2007, McGeough was extradited from the United States to Northern Ireland to face charges related to the attempted murder of a [[Ulster Defence Regiment|UDR]] soldier, Sammy Swanson, and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, stemming from an incident in 1981. He consistently denied the charges. In February 2011, he was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to 20 years in prison. However, under the terms of the [[Good Friday Agreement]] (also known as the [[Belfast Agreement]]), which facilitated the early release of paramilitary prisoners, he was released in August 2012, having served a short period of his sentence. His case sparked debate regarding the application of the Good Friday Agreement to individuals convicted of historical crimes after the agreement's signing.
Later Political Activity and Writing
Following his release, McGeough remained a vocal figure in Irish republicanism, often aligning himself with groups critical of the Good Friday Agreement and the political direction taken by [[Sinn Féin]]. He has stood as an independent candidate in several elections, including for [[Dáil Éireann]] in the [[Republic of Ireland]]. McGeough is also an author, having written books on Irish history and republicanism, often presenting a critical perspective on the peace process and historical events from a traditional republican viewpoint.
