Gerard “Gerry” Bertier (October 30, 1953 – July 22, 1981) was an American high‑school football player best known as the co‑captain of the 1971 T. C. Williams High School football team in Alexandria, Virginia. The team’s successful season and subsequent integration of the school’s athletic program were later dramatized in the 2000 film Remember the Titans.
Early life and education
Bertier was born in Alexandria, Virginia, and attended T. C. Williams High School, the city’s formerly segregated, all‑white high school. He excelled academically and athletically, becoming a standout defensive tackle on the football team.
Football career
In 1971, Bertier served as co‑captain alongside African‑American teammate Julius Campbell. Under head coach Herman Boone, the team achieved an undefeated regular season (11–0) and won the Virginia State Championship. Bertier’s performance earned him All‑Virginia honors and recognition as a leading defensive player in the state.
Paralysis and advocacy
On April 12, 1972, Bertier was injured in a car accident that resulted in a spinal cord injury, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. He used a wheelchair for the remainder of his life and became an advocate for individuals with disabilities, speaking publicly about the challenges of living with paralysis and promoting accessibility initiatives.
Later life and death
Bertier attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he studied history and continued his involvement in disability advocacy. He died on July 22, 1981, at age 27, from a pulmonary embolism related to his paralysis.
Legacy
Bertier’s role in the 1971 T. C. Williams football season has been commemorated in various ways:
