Description
Gerontia is a genus of small, air‑breathing land snails (terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusks). Members of this genus possess a subdiscoidal, broadly umbilicate shell that is typically horny brown in colour and bears five slowly increasing whorls.
Species
The genus is currently considered monotypic, containing the single species:
- Gerontia pantherina (F. W. Hutton, 1882)
Distribution and Habitat
Gerontia is endemic to New Zealand, with records primarily from the South Island. It inhabits moist terrestrial environments where it lives among leaf litter and under logs.
Taxonomic notes
The genus was established by Frederick Wollaston Hutton in 1882. Subsequent taxonomic revisions have placed Gerontia within the subfamily Charopinae of the family Charopidae. Some historical classifications listed additional subgenera, but modern consensus treats Gerontia as a valid monotypic genus.
