Gerhard Tremmel

Gerhard Martin Tremmel (born 16 November 1978) is a German former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He is currently a goalkeeping coach at Swansea City.

Tremmel began his career in Germany, playing for clubs such as SpVgg Unterhaching, Hannover 96, Energie Cottbus, and Hertha BSC. He then moved to Austria to play for Red Bull Salzburg, where he won the Austrian Bundesliga title. In 2011, he joined Swansea City in England, where he spent the majority of his later career, winning the League Cup in 2013.

Early Life and Career

Born in Munich, West Germany, Tremmel began his youth career at local giants FC Bayern Munich before moving to SpVgg Unterhaching. He started his senior career with Bayern Munich II in 1997.

Club Career

SpVgg Unterhaching

Tremmel made his professional debut with SpVgg Unterhaching in 1999. He spent three seasons with the club, experiencing both Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga football.

Hannover 96

In 2002, Tremmel transferred to Hannover 96, where he spent two seasons, primarily as a backup goalkeeper.

Energie Cottbus

Tremmel moved to Energie Cottbus in 2004, where he established himself as a first-choice goalkeeper. He played a crucial role in the club's promotion to the Bundesliga in the 2005–06 season and subsequently helped them maintain their top-flight status. He made over 100 appearances for Cottbus.

Hertha BSC

In 2007, Tremmel joined Hertha BSC. He largely served as a backup to Jaroslav Drobný during his three seasons in Berlin.

Red Bull Salzburg

Tremmel signed with Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg in 2010. He quickly became their first-choice goalkeeper and played a significant part in their title-winning campaign in the 2010–11 Austrian Bundesliga.

Swansea City

In August 2011, Tremmel moved to English Premier League club Swansea City on a free transfer. Initially signed as a backup to Michel Vorm, he proved to be a reliable deputy, making a number of appearances, particularly in cup competitions. He was a key player in Swansea's successful run to the 2013 League Cup final, playing in every round leading up to the final, including the semi-final victories over Chelsea. He also started in the final against Bradford City, helping Swansea to a historic 5–0 victory and their first major trophy. Tremmel continued to be a valuable member of the squad, featuring in the Premier League and Europa League matches. He briefly went on loan to Werder Bremen in Germany in early 2015 but returned to Swansea. He signed a new contract in 2015 but made his final appearance for the club in 2016. He retired from playing in 2017.

International Career

Tremmel never received a call-up to the senior German national team.

Post-Playing Career

Following his retirement from professional football in 2017, Tremmel transitioned into a coaching role at his former club, Swansea City, becoming a goalkeeping coach for the academy and later the first team.
