Gerald Gainous
Gerald Gainous (January 18, 1957 – December 10, 2020) was an American professional football player who was a running back in the National Football League (NFL) for the New Orleans Saints and the New York Jets.
Early Life and College Career
Gainous was born in Nashville, Tennessee. He played college football for the University of Tennessee Volunteers from 1976 to 1979. During his collegiate career, he was a prominent rusher for the Volunteers, known for his speed and agility. He earned significant recognition for his performance in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
Professional Career
Gainous was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the third round (60th overall) of the 1980 NFL Draft. He played for the Saints from 1980 to 1981, primarily as a reserve running back and kick returner. He later spent time with the New York Jets in 1982, appearing in a few games during the strike-shortened season before concluding his professional career.
Later Life and Death
After his NFL career, Gainous largely stayed out of the public eye. He passed away on December 10, 2020, at the age of 63, due to complications from COVID-19.
