George Aitken (17 October 1928 – 2 May 2003) was a Scottish professional footballer who played predominantly as a left-back. He is most notable for his extensive career with Middlesbrough, where he became a club legend, and for his solitary cap for the Scotland national team.
Career
Aitken began his professional career in his native Scotland before making a significant move to English football.
Middlesbrough In 1949, Aitken joined Middlesbrough Football Club. Over the next 12 seasons, he became an integral part of the team, renowned for his consistent performances, defensive solidity, and leadership qualities. He served as club captain for several years and was a beloved figure among the supporters. During his time at Ayresome Park, Aitken made a remarkable 406 appearances across all competitions, including 389 league matches, solidifying his status as one of the club's most enduring players.
Derby County After leaving Middlesbrough in 1961, Aitken signed for Derby County. He continued to play at a high level for two seasons, making 58 league appearances and scoring 2 goals for the club before departing in 1963.
Later Career Following his time at Derby County, Aitken played for several non-league clubs, including Gateshead and Stockton, before retiring from professional football.
International Recognition Aitken's strong club performances earned him a call-up to the Scotland national team. He made his only international appearance for Scotland on 19 May 1954, in a match against Norway.
Personal Life George Aitken remained connected to the Teesside area after his retirement from football. He passed away on 2 May 2003, at the age of 74.
