Geoffrey Walsh is a Canadian professional ice hockey executive and former player. He is best known for his extensive career in National Hockey League (NHL) management, serving as general manager for the Colorado Avalanche, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Minnesota Wild, and holding various other executive roles. He currently works as a professional scout for the Seattle Kraken.
Early Life and Playing Career
Born in Cambridge, Ontario, Walsh played collegiate hockey at Western Michigan University from 1983 to 1987. After his college career, he played professionally for a brief period in the minor leagues, including stints with the Milwaukee Admirals in the International Hockey League (IHL) and the Flint Spirits in the Colonial Hockey League (CoHL), before transitioning into a management career.
Management Career
Walsh began his management career in the early 1990s, eventually joining the Quebec Nordiques organization. When the Nordiques relocated and became the Colorado Avalanche in 1995, Walsh remained with the team.
- Colorado Avalanche (1995–1998): He served as the assistant general manager for the Avalanche and was part of the front office that won the Stanley Cup in 1996. He was promoted to general manager of the Avalanche on June 23, 1998, a position he held for one season.
- Columbus Blue Jackets (1998–2003): Walsh was hired as the first general manager of the expansion Columbus Blue Jackets on October 1, 1998. He was instrumental in building the inaugural team from the ground up, including participating in the 2000 NHL Expansion Draft and subsequent entry drafts. He served as GM until June 18, 2003.
- Minnesota Wild (2003–2018): Following his tenure with the Blue Jackets, Walsh joined the Minnesota Wild. He held various senior management roles with the Wild, including Assistant General Manager, and was later promoted to General Manager on January 10, 2013, a position he held until April 10, 2018. During his time as GM, the Wild made the playoffs five times.
- Seattle Kraken (2021–present): After a period away from NHL management, Walsh was hired by the expansion Seattle Kraken in 2021 to serve as a professional scout, contributing to the team's player evaluation and development efforts.
