Geoffrey William Guy (born 1954) is a British pharmacologist, physician, businessman, and academic notable for co‑founding GW Pharmaceuticals, a leading company in the development of cannabinoid‑based medicines. His work has contributed to the creation of the first cannabis‑derived pharmaceuticals approved for use on the United Kingdom’s National Health Service (NHS), including Sativex and Epidiolex.
Early life and education
Guy was born in Stanmore, Middlesex, England, the youngest of three children. He spent part of his childhood in Christchurch, Dorset, before moving to Barton on Sea. He attended St Peter’s School in Bournemouth, where he played rugby and joined the Air Training Corps. Guy pursued medical studies at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in pharmacology from the University of London in 1976. He earned his MBBS degree in 1979, followed by qualifications including MRCS (England), LRCP, and LMSSA. In 1984, he received a Diploma in Pharmaceutical Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians.
Medical and pharmaceutical career
Guy entered the pharmaceutical industry in 1980, initially working in opiate research. From 1981 to 1983 he served as international clinical research coordinator at Laboratoires Pierre Fabre, focusing on plant‑derived active ingredients. He later directed clinical development at Napp Laboratories (1983‑1985), where he contributed to the development of slow‑release morphine formulations and explored Chinese‑medicine‑derived treatments for atopic eczema.
In 1985 Guy founded Ethical Holdings plc. He co‑founded the plant‑medicine company that later became Phytopharm plc in 1990, serving as its chairman until 1997. In 1998, together with Brian Whittle, he co‑established GW Pharmaceuticals, which pursued research into the therapeutic potential of cannabinoids. Under his leadership, GW Pharmaceuticals developed Sativex (nabiximols), a cannabis‑based spray for multiple sclerosis spasticity, and Epidiolex, a cannabidiol preparation for severe epilepsy. Both medicines received NHS approval, marking the first regulatory acceptance of cannabis‑derived drugs in the UK.
Academic contributions and publications
Guy has authored, co‑authored, or edited over 200 clinical studies and several books. Notable among his publications is The Medicinal Uses of Cannabis and Cannabinoids (2004). He served on the editorial board of the Journal of Cannabis Therapeutics and has been involved in numerous scientific conferences and advisory panels relating to pharmacology and cannabinoid research.
Later activities
Beyond his pharmaceutical work, Guy is involved in charitable and philanthropic endeavors, including the establishment of the Guy Foundation Family Trust, which supports research into quantum effects in biology and related medical innovations.
