Geoff Henke

Geoffrey "Geoff" Henke (born 12 March 1947) is an Australian former ice‑hockey player, sports administrator, and Olympic official. He is most notable for his long‑term involvement in the development of winter sports in Australia and for serving as the President of the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) from 2001 to 2016.

Early life and ice‑hockey career
Henke was born in Melbourne, Victoria. He began playing ice hockey at a young age and represented Australia internationally. Henke competed for the Australian national team at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, France, where Australia fielded its first and only Olympic ice‑hockey team to date. Following the Olympic appearance, he continued to play domestically and contributed to the growth of the sport within the country.

Transition to sports administration
After retiring from competition, Henke moved into sports administration, initially focusing on winter sports. He served as the inaugural Director of the Australian Institute of Sport’s (AIS) winter sports program, overseeing athlete development in disciplines such as alpine skiing, freestyle skiing, snowboarding, and short‑track speed skating.

Australian Olympic Committee involvement
Henke joined the Australian Olympic Committee in the early 1990s, holding various positions including Vice‑President. In 2001, he was elected President of the AOC, a role he held for three terms until 2016. Under his leadership, Australia expanded its participation in Winter Olympic Games, supported elite athlete pathways, and increased funding for high‑performance sport. Henke also chaired the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Coordination Commission for the 2012 London Summer Olympics and served on multiple IOC advisory bodies.
