Geobenazzia is a monotypic genus of land planarians (family Geoplanidae, subfamily Microplaninae) described by Minelli in 1974. The sole recognized species within the genus is Geobenazzia tyrrhenica Minelli, 1974, which is endemic to the island of Elba, Italy.
Taxonomy
- Kingdom: Animalia
- Phylum: Platyhelminthes
- Class: Rhabditophora
- Order: Tricladida
- Family: Geoplanidae
- Subfamily: Microplaninae
- Genus: Geobenazzia Minelli, 1974
- Species: Geobenazzia tyrrhenica Minelli, 1974
Description
Geobenazzia tyrrhenica exhibits morphological characteristics typical of terrestrial planarians, including a dorsoventrally flattened, elongated body capable of ciliary gliding. Its anatomy closely resembles that of species in the genus Othelosoma, with the primary distinguishing feature being the presence of an adenodactyl— a finger‑like glandular projection within the copulatory apparatus. The male reproductive system contains a large seminal vesicle and a penis papilla, while the female system includes a seminal bursa (bursa copulatrix) connected to the vagina by a single duct.
Distribution and Habitat
The genus is known solely from Elba, an island in the Tuscan Archipelago of Italy. Specimens have been collected from moist, shaded terrestrial habitats where they prey on small invertebrates.
Significance
As a monotypic and geographically restricted genus, Geobenazzia contributes to the biodiversity of European land planarians and serves as a point of interest for studies of biogeography, systematics, and reproductive morphology within the Geoplanidae.
