Gennady Ivanovich Obaturov (born 1940) was a Soviet cosmonaut candidate selected in 1970. Although he completed general space training, he never flew into space.
Born in 1940 in the Soviet Union, Obaturov joined the cosmonaut corps as part of the TsPK Group 4 (Центр подготовки космонавтов, Cosmonaut Training Center) selection on April 27, 1970. This group was comprised primarily of military pilots and engineers.
During his time as a cosmonaut candidate, Obaturov underwent the comprehensive general space training curriculum at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center. He was reportedly assigned to a group involved with the development and training for the LKS (Lunar Landing Ship) program, which was the Soviet Union's counterpart to the American Apollo Lunar Module, intended for a crewed lunar landing.
Gennady Obaturov's career as a cosmonaut candidate came to an end in 1974 when he was dismissed from the corps due to health reasons, precluding him from any further flight assignments. He is one of many individuals who trained extensively for spaceflight but did not ultimately achieve a space mission.
