Gene Petit (c. May 19, 1949 – September 29, 2013) was an American professional wrestler best known for his portrayal of Cousin Luke in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) during the mid-1980s.
Early Life and Education
Petit was born in Humphreys County, Mississippi. He attended the University of Tampa, where he played for the football team. While there, he met former Olympic wrestler Dale Lewis, who later trained him for professional wrestling.
Professional Wrestling Career
Petit made his professional debut in 1973. He initially wrestled under his real name and later used the ring name Gene Lewis, competing as a kayfabe (storyline) brother of Dale Lewis due to their similar appearance.
In the 1980s, while wrestling in Florida, Petit joined a stable called the Army of Darkness, using a devil-worshipping gimmick under the ring name Kharma.
World Wrestling Federation (WWF)
Petit joined the WWF after showing booker George Scott a comedic photograph of himself wearing cutoff jeans, overalls, and a floppy hat. This led to the creation of Cousin Luke, a silent, expressionless hillbilly character and a member of the Hillbilly Family stable alongside Hillbilly Jim and Uncle Elmer. The group feuded with Roddy Piper, Bob Orton Jr., and Jesse Ventura.
Petit was scheduled to compete at WrestleMania 2 against Adrian Adonis but had to decline due to a broken ankle caused by a defective wrestling ring. He departed the WWF in 1986.
Later Career
After leaving the WWF, Petit worked for All Japan Pro Wrestling as Texas Red. He continued wrestling on the independent circuit, primarily in New Jersey and the New York City area, under the name "Hillbilly Cousin Luke." His last match was in 2002.
Retirement and Death
Petit retired from wrestling in 2000 due to back problems. He lived in Bernardsville, New Jersey, and served on the board of directors for the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame. He suffered from multiple sclerosis and diabetes in his later years and resided in a long-term health facility. He died on September 29, 2013, at approximately age 65.
