Geetanjali Babbar

Early Life and Inspiration

Geetanjali Babbar initially pursued a career in advertising and filmmaking. However, her life took a significant turn after an encounter with a group of women and children in G.B. Road in 1998. Deeply moved by their struggles and the lack of opportunities, she decided to dedicate her life to social service. She left her profession to establish Kat-Katha in 2000.

Kat-Katha

Kat-Katha (meaning "story of the Kat," referring to a small hut or home) was founded with the aim of creating a safe and nurturing environment for the women and children living in the challenging circumstances of the red-light area. The organization focuses on:

  • Education: Providing formal and informal education to children, and basic literacy to women.
  • Healthcare: Facilitating access to medical services, counseling, and health awareness programs.
  • Vocational Training: Equipping women and older children with skills for alternative livelihoods, such as tailoring, embroidery, and computer literacy, to empower them towards economic independence.
  • Rehabilitation and Rescue: Working towards rescuing minors from the trade and rehabilitating women who wish to leave.
  • Community Building: Creating a sense of community and dignity among the residents, fostering a supportive network.

Under Babbar's leadership, Kat-Katha has grown to impact hundreds of lives, offering a pathway out of destitution and into a life of dignity and opportunity.
