Gastrophysa

Gastrophysa is a genus of leaf beetles belonging to the family Chrysomelidae, subfamily Galerucinae (tribe Alticini). Species within this genus are commonly referred to as flea beetles due to their enlarged hind legs, which enable powerful jumping.

  • Gastrophysa viridula (Linnaeus, 1758) – commonly known as the green dock beetle.
  • Gastrophysa polygoni (Linnaeus, 1758) – often called the common dock beetle.

Additional species have been recorded in various regional faunal surveys, but taxonomic revisions occasionally synonymize or reassign them.

Morphology
Members of Gastrophysa are small beetles, typically 2–4 mm in length. They display a convex, oval-shaped body with a glossy exoskeleton. Coloration varies among species, ranging from bright green (G. viridula) to brownish or metallic hues. The hind femora are markedly enlarged, facilitating their characteristic jumping behavior.

Distribution and Habitat
Gastrophysa species are native to the Palearctic region, with a concentration in Europe and parts of western Asia. Their range extends into temperate zones where host plants are abundant. These beetles are primarily found in habitats such as meadows, riverbanks, and waste places where their larval and adult food plants occur.

Ecology and Life Cycle

  • Host Plants: The genus is closely associated with plants in the family Polygonaceae, especially species of Rumex (dock) and Polygonum. Adult beetles feed on leaf tissue, creating characteristic shot‑hole damage, while larvae consume roots and lower stems.
  • Reproduction: Females lay eggs on or near host plants. Upon hatching, larvae develop in the soil, feeding on plant roots before pupating in the soil or leaf litter.
  • Seasonality: Adults are typically active from spring through early autumn, with peak abundance in late summer.

Economic and Environmental Significance
While Gastrophysa species are not considered major agricultural pests, they can cause noticeable foliar damage on cultivated dock and related weeds. Their presence can be an indicator of the health of riparian and meadow ecosystems.

Research and Conservation
The genus is of interest in studies of plant‑insect interactions, particularly regarding host specificity and defensive chemistry. No species within Gastrophysa is currently listed as threatened on major conservation assessments (e.g., IUCN Red List).
