Garokk

Garokk (also known as the Petrified Man) is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Jack Kirby, the character first debuted in Astonishing Tales #2 (November 1970). Garokk is a resident of the Savage Land, an isolated prehistoric region in Antarctica, and serves as an antagonist to the X‑Men and Ka‑Zar. He possesses a stone‑like, immortal body and a range of energy‑ and matter‑manipulating abilities. The character has made limited appearances in media outside comics, including X‑Men: The Animated Series and the video game X‑Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse.

Publication history
Garokk was introduced in Astonishing Tales #2 (Nov. 1970) as part of a storyline by Thomas and Kirby that explored the Savage Land setting. The creators have cited influences from adventure pulp fiction, notably the Tarzan novels and the Gold Key comic Turok, Son of Stone. Subsequent appearances have been sporadic, often featuring Garokk in conflicts involving the X‑Men, Ka‑Zar, or other Marvel characters such as Magneto.

Fictional character biography

Origins
According to the Marvel narrative, Garokk began as a 15th‑century British sailor aboard the HMS Drake, which wrecked in Antarctica. After being swept into a warm underground stream, he entered the Savage Land and encountered the Sun People, who worshipped a sun god called Garokk. Drinking a potion from a sacred cup, the sailor became immortal; over centuries his body transformed into an organic, stone‑like substance, rendering him indistinguishable from the deity’s statue. Assuming the identity of the “Petrified Man,” he returned to the Savage Land, where the natives believed his arrival fulfilled a prophecy.

Conflicts and transformations
Garokk’s early confrontations involved the native tribes and Ka‑Zar, whom he briefly subdued before being trapped in an underground pool that stripped him of his powers, causing rapid aging and death. He was later resurrected by the sorceress Zaladane, who transferred his essence into the body of adventurer Kirk Marston, creating a duplicate of his stone form. Together with Zaladane, Garokk attempted to unite the Savage Land tribes by forcing the construction of a massive city, a plan thwarted by the X‑Men and Ka‑Zar.

Magneto later captured the surviving Garokk, reshaping him into a half‑molten, half‑crystalline guardian of an Antarctic base. In this role he clashed with Storm before falling into a deep pit. Subsequent storylines saw Garokk acquiring the alien armor of Terminus, using it to devastate the Savage Land, and later being freed from its influence by the X‑Men. He ultimately aided the High Evolutionary’s machine to restore the Savage Land, an act that fused his essence with the environment, effectively ending his individual existence. Garokk has reappeared in later issues as a revived antagonist of Ka‑Zar.

Powers and abilities
Garokk’s physiology consists of an organic, stone‑like substance that grants him:

  • Superhuman stamina, durability, and resistance to injury.
  • Immortality; he does not age and can regenerate after bodily destruction.
  • Energy projection from his eyes, capable of emitting heat, light, concussive force, and dimensional warps.
  • Matter manipulation on a sub‑atomic level, allowing him to reshape terrain and create portals.
  • Limited telepathy, enabling him to sense the activities of his worshippers.
  • Size alteration and transformation into pure energy, which he can revert to his stone form at will.

Other versions
An alternate‑universe incarnation of Garokk appears in the Earth‑928 timeline of 2099: World of Tomorrow, where he briefly possesses the sorceress Mlle Strange.
