Definition
Gareth Hale (born 19 July 1958) is an English comedian, actor, and television presenter, best known as one half of the comedy double act Hale and Pace alongside Norman Pace.
Overview
Born in Bolton, Lancashire, England, Hale pursued a career in entertainment after training as a performer. He and Norman Pace formed a partnership in the early 1980s, developing a sketch‑comedy style that emphasized character-driven humour and rapid‑fire dialogue. Their television breakthrough came with the BBC series Hale and Pace (1992–1998), which combined stand‑alone sketches with recurring characters and ran for six series. The duo also appeared in a number of other television programmes, including guest spots on The Smell of the Game, The All New Alexei Sayle Show and various charity specials.
Beyond television, Hale has performed in stage productions, notably in pantomime and regional theatre, and has made occasional appearances in film and radio comedy. While his prominence peaked during the 1990s, he continues to work intermittently in the entertainment industry.
Etymology/Origin
- Gareth is a masculine given name of Welsh origin, derived from the medieval Welsh name Geraint and traditionally interpreted as “gentle” or “kind.”
- Hale is an English surname derived from the Old English word hāl, meaning “healthy,” or from a place‑name element denoting a nook or remote valley.
Characteristics
- Comedic style – Hale’s performances are characterised by exaggerated characters, physical comedy, and a blend of slap‑stick with observational humour.
- Partnership dynamics – The successful collaboration with Norman Pace relies on contrasting personas; Hale often plays the more earnest or bewildered character, while Pace adopts a more flamboyant or absurd role.
- Versatility – In addition to sketch comedy, Hale has demonstrated adaptability through pantomime roles, live audience interaction, and occasional dramatic acting.
