Overview
Born in New York City, McKay attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where he studied drama. He began his acting career in the mid‑1950s, appearing in stage productions and minor film roles before gaining widespread fame with Adventures in Paradise, a syndicated adventure series that aired for three seasons. After the series ended, McKay made occasional film appearances, including The Great Impostor (1961) and The Young Lovers (1964). In 1964, at the height of his popularity, he abruptly retired from acting, citing a desire to pursue personal artistic interests.
Following his departure from Hollywood, McKay devoted himself to painting and writing. He exhibited his visual art in galleries across the United States and authored several books, among them the novel The Last Dinosaur (1970) and the non‑fiction work The Way of the Turtle (1975). He also contributed articles on art and philosophy to various periodicals. McKay spent his later years in Ojai, California, where he continued to paint until his death in 2001.
