Gancia is a historic Italian producer of wines, sparkling wines, and vermouths, headquartered in Canelli, Piedmont. Founded in 1850 by Carlo Gancia, the company is widely recognized for its pioneering contributions to the Italian sparkling wine industry and its long-standing tradition of producing high-quality Italian beverages.
History
The company was established in 1850 by Carlo Gancia, who had previously studied the traditional winemaking techniques, particularly those for Champagne, in Reims, France. Upon his return to Canelli, in the heart of the Langhe region of Piedmont, Gancia applied his knowledge to local grape varieties. In 1865, Carlo Gancia achieved a significant milestone by creating the first Italian sparkling wine produced using the Metodo Classico (traditional method), a labor-intensive process involving a second fermentation in the bottle, similar to Champagne. This innovation, often referred to as "Spumante Classico," marked the birth of Italian sparkling wine as a distinct category and laid the groundwork for future developments like Franciacorta and high-quality Prosecco.
Gancia also played a pivotal role in the development of Moscato Spumante and Asti Spumante. By adapting the Martinotti-Charmat method (tank method) to the aromatic Moscato grape, the company helped create a sweet, fragrant sparkling wine that gained immense popularity both domestically and internationally. Beyond sparkling wines, Gancia also established itself as a prominent producer of vermouth, a fortified wine flavored with various botanicals, notably their Gancia Americano.
Throughout its history, Gancia has maintained a commitment to quality and innovation, preserving its heritage while adapting to modern market demands and expanding its global presence.
