Gamleby

Gamleby is a locality (tätort) situated in Västervik Municipality, Kalmar County, in the province of Småland, Sweden. As of the 2020 census conducted by Statistics Sweden, the population of Gamleby was approximately 5,200 inhabitants. The settlement lies on the eastern coast of Sweden, roughly 15 kilometres north of the municipal seat, Västervik, and is positioned near several inland water bodies, including the lake Bäckasjön.

Etymology
The name “Gamleby” derives from the Swedish words gammal (“old”) and by (“village” or “town”), literally meaning “old town”. The designation historically distinguished the settlement from newer nearby communities.

Geography
Gamleby is located in a region characterized by a mixed landscape of forests, agricultural land, and lakes. The locality is served by the Kalmar–Linköping railway line, providing regional rail connections to larger urban centers such as Kalmar and Linköping.

History
The area that now comprises Gamleby was historically part of a larger parish that included several smaller villages. Over time, the settlement grew around a market centre and eventually became the administrative hub for the surrounding rural district. Until the municipal reform of 1971, Gamleby functioned as the seat of the former Gamleby Municipality.
