Gambeya boiviniana

Taxonomy

  • Kingdom: Plantae
  • Clade: Angiosperms
  • Clade: Eudicots
  • Order: Ericales
  • Family: Sapotaceae
  • Genus: Gambeya J.-F.Leroy
  • Species: Gambeya boiviniana (Baill.) A.Chev.

Gambeya boiviniana was originally described as Pouteria boiviniana Baill. and later transferred to the genus Gambeya by Auguste Chevalier. The specific epithet “boiviniana” honors the French botanist Louis Hyacinthe Boivin (1808–1852), who collected extensively in Madagascar.

Description
Detailed morphological information for Gambeya boiviniana is not widely available in standard botanical references. As a member of the Sapotaceae, it can be inferred that the species is an evergreen tree with simple, alternate leaves, and produces small, inconspicuous flowers followed by fleshy fruits typical of the family. Precise data on tree height, leaf size, flower structure, and fruit characteristics for this species are currently lacking in accessible literature.

Distribution and Habitat
Gambeya boiviniana is reported to be native to Madagascar. It occurs in the island’s humid forest zones, primarily in lowland to montane evergreen forests. Exact locality records, altitudinal range, and habitat specificity have not been comprehensively documented in publicly available sources.

Conservation Status
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has not evaluated Gambeya boiviniana as a separate species; therefore, an official conservation status is unavailable. Information on population trends, threats, or protective measures is insufficient.

Uses
There are no well‑documented ethnobotanical or commercial uses for Gambeya boiviniana in the literature consulted. General uses of Gambeya species in Madagascar include timber and occasional local medicinal applications, but it cannot be confirmed whether G. boiviniana shares these uses.
