Gaman Palem is an Indian comic book illustrator, visual artist, educator, and media scholar. He has illustrated more than 100 Indian children's comics, working primarily on mythological subjects.
Career and Education
Palem holds a Ph.D. in journalism and mass communication from Madurai Kamaraj University, Tamil Nadu. He is an entrepreneur, media scholar, and artist who uses the graphic novel format as a medium to express his ideas. With a strong background in mass communication, advertising, graphic design, animation pre-production, and publishing, he specializes in contemporary communication methods and visual communication.
Artistic Style and Work
Palem's artistic style is influenced by Indian iconography, combining traditional illustration techniques such as watercolour, pen, and ink with modern digital methods. His understanding of Indian mythology, along with its regional versions and interpretations, has led him to create works that blend mythical characters with contemporary contexts.
His first series of eight picture books, The Golden Mythology Series, won the National Award for Excellence in Printing Children's Books.
Recent Endeavors
Palem's recent industrial work has been in the field of human-factor-based user interface designing with augmented reality, supplementing traditional print material for early learning under the banner BRAINTM Publishing. He aims to create modules with a consistent user interface that is easy to use, aids in learning, and is enjoyable for users.
Teaching and Academic Roles
Palem has actively taught subjects pertaining to visual education in Tamil Nadu. He was a lecturer at Loyola College in Chennai and a visiting faculty member at Raffles International College. He has also served as a creative consultant in publishing houses and animation studios and works as a research associate on various research projects. He currently works as a design professor at the Vellore Institute of Technology. He lives and works in Chennai.
