Geography
Galanta is a town situated in the southwestern part of Slovakia, within the Trnava Region. It lies on the Danubian Lowland (Podunajská nížina) near the confluence of the Little Danube (Malý Dunaj) and the Vah River. The town is located at an elevation of approximately 115 m (377 ft) above sea level and is positioned about 30 km southeast of the regional capital, Trnava.
History
The earliest recorded mention of Galanta dates to 1237, when it was referenced in a royal charter of the Kingdom of Hungary. Throughout the Middle Ages, the settlement developed as a market town under the jurisdiction of various noble families, most notably the Esterházy dominion in later centuries.
Following the dissolution of Austria‑Hungary after World War I, Galanta became part of the newly formed Czechoslovakia in 1918. After the split of Czechoslovakia in 1993, the town has been within the independent Slovak Republic.
Demographics
According to the Slovak Statistical Office, the population of Galanta in 2022 was approximately 15 600 inhabitants. The ethnic composition is predominantly Slovak, with minorities of Hungarians, Roma, and other groups. The majority of residents identify with Roman Catholicism, while other Christian denominations and non‑religious affiliations are also present.
