Description
Gahnia procera is a perennial, tussock‑forming sedge. Mature plants form dense clumps reaching heights of up to 2 m (approximately 6 ft). The foliage consists of narrow, stiff, grass‑like leaves with a pronounced midrib. Inflorescences are terminal, consisting of several spikelets that mature to a brownish‑black color. The species produces achene fruits typical of the Cyperaceae.
Distribution and Habitat
- Geographic range: Endemic to New Zealand. Occurs on both the North Island and the South Island.
- Habitat: Prefers wet lowland to sub‑alpine environments, including swamp margins, damp forest edges, and riverbanks. It is commonly found in areas with consistently moist, acidic soils.
