Definition
Gading Serpong is a planned township and mixed‑use urban development located in the city of Tangerang, Banten Province, Indonesia. It forms part of the Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) metropolitan area and includes residential, commercial, educational, and recreational facilities.
Overview
The Gading Serpong development occupies an area of roughly 2,000 hectares in the western part of the Tangerang municipality, bordering the districts of Serpong and Ciputat. Initiated in the early 2000s by a consortium of Indonesian property developers, the project was designed to accommodate the rapid population growth and housing demand of the Jakarta metropolitan region. The township is divided into several zones, each featuring distinct land‑use patterns such as gated residential neighborhoods, office parks, shopping malls, hotels, and university campuses. Major infrastructure links include the Jakarta–Serpong Toll Road, the Serpong–Balaraja Toll Road, and the nearby Serpong railway station on the KRL Commuterline network, providing connectivity to central Jakarta and other parts of the region.
Etymology / Origin
The name “Gading Serpong” combines two Indonesian words: “gading,” meaning “ivory,” and “Serpong,” the name of the historic district in which the development is situated. The term likely reflects a marketing choice intended to evoke a sense of prestige and locality.
Characteristics
- Residential: The township comprises multiple housing estates, ranging from low‑rise apartments to upscale gated communities, catering to middle‑ and upper‑income households.
- Commercial: Prominent commercial centers include Summarecon Serpong Mall, Serpong Mall, and various office complexes that host multinational corporations and local enterprises.
- Educational: Several higher‑education institutions have campuses within the area, such as BINUS University, Universitas Mercu Buana, and the Indonesian Institute of Technology (ITB) Serpong Campus.
- Recreational & Public Amenities: Parks, sports facilities, hospitals, and cultural venues are integrated into the master plan to provide a self‑contained urban environment.
- Transportation: In addition to road links, the township is served by the Serpong commuter rail station and planned extensions of the Jakarta Light Rail Transit (LRT) system, facilitating public‑transport access.
- Governance: While the overall land‑use planning is overseen by the Tangerang municipal government, individual phases of development are managed by private developers under public‑private partnership arrangements.
