Günter Böttcher

Günter Böttcher (July 24, 1954 – October 4, 2012) was a German handball player and coach who competed primarily during the 1970s and 1980s. Born in Kassel, West Germany, he is best known for his career as a backcourt player and his contributions to the West German national team.

Böttcher’s professional club career was most notably associated with TV Hüttenberg, a team in the German Handball-Bundesliga. His performance at the club level led to his selection for the West German national team, for which he made 40 appearances and scored 40 goals. He represented West Germany at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, where the team finished in fourth place.

Following his retirement as a player, Böttcher transitioned into coaching. He managed several teams in the German league system, including MT Melsungen, TV Kirchzell, and SC Magdeburg (second team). He also served as a coach for the German University national team (Studentennationalmannschaft), leading them to a world championship title in 1990.

In addition to his sports career, Böttcher was a teacher by profession. He died in October 2012 in Bad Hersfeld, Germany.
