Gössenheim is a municipality (Gemeinde) in the district of Main-Spessart, located in the Regierungsbezirk of Unterfranken (Lower Franconia) in the state of Bavaria, Germany. It is a member of the Verwaltungsgemeinschaft (administrative community) of Gemünden am Main.
Geography
Gössenheim lies in the Würzburg region of the Spessart forest, near the confluence of the rivers Wern and Main. The municipality covers an area of approximately 10.41 km² (4.02 sq mi) and is situated at an elevation of about 229 meters (751 feet) above sea level. The surrounding landscape consists of mixed woodlands, agricultural fields, and small watercourses.
History
The earliest documented reference to Gössenheim dates to the 12th century, when it was mentioned in a land register of the Bishopric of Würzburg. Throughout the Middle Ages, the village was part of the secular holdings of the Counts of Rieneck and later came under the jurisdiction of the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg. Following the secularization of ecclesiastical territories in 1803 and subsequent administrative reforms, Gössenheim became incorporated into the Kingdom of Bavaria. The modern municipal structure was established with the Bavarian municipal reform of 1972.
