Gérard Biard

Born in France, Biard began his career in journalism, eventually joining the team of La Grosse Bertha before moving to Charlie Hebdo in 1992. He contributed to the paper as a writer and columnist for many years, known for his incisive commentary and satirical perspective.

Following the tragic terrorist attack on Charlie Hebdo's offices in Paris on January 7, 2015, which resulted in the deaths of several key staff members including his predecessor Stéphane "Charb" Charbonnier, Gérard Biard assumed the role of editor-in-chief. In this capacity, he played a crucial role in the newspaper's continuation and its public representation in the aftermath of the attack.

Biard has since become a prominent voice in the international debate surrounding freedom of speech, secularism, and the challenges faced by satirical media. He has frequently spoken out on these issues, advocating for the right to offend and criticize, often in the context of defending Charlie Hebdo's editorial line. Under his leadership, Charlie Hebdo has continued to publish, maintaining its distinctive style of provocative and often controversial satire.
