G Plan

G Plan is a British furniture brand, originally produced by E Gomme Ltd, later Gomme Holdings. It is known for its mid-century modern design and mass-produced, high-quality furniture.

History:

The brand was launched in 1953 by E Gomme, a furniture manufacturer based in High Wycombe, England. E Gomme had been producing furniture since 1898, but "G Plan" represented a new approach: offering complete, coordinated ranges of furniture for the modern home. The name "G Plan" was derived from "Gomme Plan," signifying a pre-planned and coordinated set of furniture designs. The initial ranges were heavily influenced by Scandinavian design principles, emphasizing clean lines, functionality, and the use of teak and other hardwoods.

During the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, G Plan became hugely popular in the UK, synonymous with aspirational modern living. The company's advertising campaigns, featuring showrooms and lifestyle photography, contributed significantly to its success. G Plan was one of the first British furniture manufacturers to embrace mass-production techniques, allowing it to offer relatively affordable, stylish furniture to a wide market.

Design and Style:

G Plan furniture is typically characterized by:

  • Mid-Century Modern aesthetic: Emphasizing clean lines, geometric shapes, and a minimalist design approach.
  • Use of teak and other hardwoods: Teak was a particularly popular choice due to its durability and attractive grain. Other woods frequently used included mahogany and afromosia.
  • Functional design: Pieces were designed to be practical and space-saving, with features like built-in storage and extendable tables.
  • Modular design: Many G Plan ranges featured modular components that could be combined and rearranged to suit different spaces and needs.

Later Years and Present Day:

The popularity of G Plan declined in the late 1970s and 1980s as tastes changed and cheaper furniture imports became available. Gomme Holdings was eventually sold, and the G Plan brand has changed ownership several times.

Today, G Plan furniture continues to be produced, though under different ownership. While some designs are based on classic mid-century models, the company also produces contemporary furniture. Original G Plan furniture from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s remains highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts of mid-century modern design.
