Fushë‑Bulqizë is a town and former municipality located in Dibër County in northeastern Albania. Following the 2015 administrative reform, it became a subdivision (administrative unit) of the municipality of Bulqizë.
Geography
The settlement lies in a valley along the Bulqizë River, at an elevation of roughly 500 m (1,640 ft) above sea level. It is situated near the national road SH4, which connects the city of Tirana with the northeastern border regions. The surrounding area is characterized by hilly terrain and mixed agricultural and forested land.
Administrative status
Prior to the 2015 local government reform enacted by Law No. 115/2014, Fushë‑Bulqizë functioned as an independent municipality. After the reform, it was incorporated as an administrative unit within the larger Bulqizë municipality, retaining local governance structures such as a mayor’s office and a population council.
Demographics
According to the 2011 national census, the former municipality of Fushë‑Bulqizë had a population of 5,529 residents. The majority of inhabitants are ethnic Albanians, and Albanian is the primary language spoken. The population density is low, reflecting the town’s rural character.
Economy
The local economy is primarily based on agriculture, livestock breeding, and small‑scale trade. The broader Bulqizë region is notable for its mining activities, particularly chromium extraction, which provides employment opportunities for some residents of Fushë‑Bulqizë. However, the town itself does not host major industrial facilities.
History
The name “Fushë‑Bulqizë” translates from Albanian as “field of Bulqizë,” indicating its historic role as the agricultural plain serving the nearby town of Bulqizë. Historical records show that the area has been inhabited since at least the Ottoman period, although detailed documentation of its early development is limited.
Infrastructure
Fushë‑Bulqizë is connected to the regional road network via the SH4 highway, facilitating transport to larger urban centers such as Tirana and the city of Kukës. Basic public services, including primary education and health care, are available within the town, with additional facilities located in the municipal center of Bulqizë.
