Frumosu is a commune located in Suceava County, in the historical region of Bukovina, northeastern Romania. The commune is administratively composed of a single village, also named Frumosu. According to the most recent census data available from the Romanian National Institute of Statistics, the population of the commune is approximately 2,500 inhabitants, the majority of whom are ethnic Romanians, with minorities of Ukrainians and other groups.
Geography
Frumosu lies on the foothills of the Eastern Carpathians, at an elevation ranging between 250 and 400 meters above sea level. The area is characterized by a mixture of agricultural lands, forested zones, and small watercourses that drain into the Suceava River basin.
History
The settlement of Frumosu was first documented in the 16th century, appearing in administrative records of the Principality of Moldavia. Throughout its history, the commune was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire's Bukovina province (1775–1918) and subsequently became part of Greater Romania after World War I. During the interwar period, Frumosu was incorporated into the Câmpulung County, and after the administrative reform of 1968, it was assigned to Suceava County, where it remains today.
Economy
The local economy is primarily based on agriculture, with the cultivation of cereals, potatoes, and orchards. Small-scale animal husbandry and forestry also contribute to the livelihood of residents. In recent years, limited tourism has developed due to the commune’s proximity to natural attractions in the Carpathian foothills.
Cultural and Architectural Heritage
Frumosu is home to several religious and historical structures, including an Orthodox wooden church dating from the late 19th century, which is listed as a local historic monument. Traditional Bukovinian folk customs, such as costume wearing and seasonal festivals, are still observed by the community.
Etymology
The name “Frumosu” derives from the Romanian word frumos, meaning “beautiful” or “handsome.” The suffix “-u” functions as a nominal ending in Romanian to form place names, indicating a location associated with the adjective. Thus, the name can be interpreted as “the beautiful place.”
Administrative Status
Frumosu is governed by a mayor and a local council elected every four years, in accordance with Romanian local administration law. The commune falls under the jurisdiction of the Suceava County Council for regional matters.
