Definition
Fritzi Scheff (April 13, 1879 – January 5, 1954) was an Austrian‑born American soprano and actress, noted for her performances in operettas and musical theatre during the early 20th century.
Overview
Born in Vienna, Austria-Hungary, Scheff received vocal training in her native city before embarking on a professional career. She gained prominence on the European stage, particularly in productions of Johann Strauss II’s Die Fledermaus and Franz Lehár’s The Merry Widow. In 1905, she moved to the United States, where she debuted on Broadway in the operetta The Merry Widow at the New York Theatre. Her American career included roles in The Firefly (1912), The Maid of the Mountains (1917), and a series of concert tours across the United States and Canada.
Scheff recorded several phonograph discs for the Victor Talking Machine Company and later for Columbia Records, preserving a repertoire of arias and popular songs of the era. She retired from the stage in the late 1930s but remained involved in teaching voice and supporting charitable causes until her death in New York City in 1954.
