Friends (American band)

Friends was an American indie pop band formed in Brooklyn, New York, in 2011. The group gained attention for their distinctive blend of indie pop, R&B, and tropical influences, centered around the vocals of Samantha Urbani. They released one studio album, Manifest, in 2012 before disbanding around 2013–2014.

History

The band coalesced around singer Samantha Urbani, with other members including Lesley Hann (bass), Nikki Taylor (keyboards, vocals), Matthew Cranfield (guitar), and Oliver Duncan (drums). They quickly garnered buzz in the indie music scene following the release of their early singles, particularly "I'm His Girl," which gained significant blogosphere attention and airplay on BBC Radio 1. Their sound was often described as playful, catchy, and infused with a nostalgic, lo-fi aesthetic.

Friends signed with Lucky Number Music in the UK and Fat Possum Records in the US. Their debut album, Manifest, was released in June 2012. The album received generally positive reviews, with critics praising its infectious melodies, Urbani's charismatic vocals, and the band's unique stylistic fusion. Following the album's release, Friends embarked on tours in support of the record, playing various festivals and headline shows.

Despite their initial success and critical acclaim, the band's activity began to wane in late 2013. Personal and creative differences among members, as well as the demanding nature of touring and recording, contributed to the group's eventual dissolution.

Musical Style

Friends' music was characterized by its eclectic mix of genres. Their core sound was indie pop, but it incorporated elements of lo-fi, chillwave, R&B, and dance music. Samantha Urbani's distinctive vocal delivery, often described as soulful yet whimsical, was a central feature. Lyrically, their songs often explored themes of relationships, identity, and youth. Instrumentation typically included synthesizers, guitars, bass, and drums, with a focus on creating a warm, sometimes hazy, sonic atmosphere.
