A right-arm fast-medium bowler, Miller was a significant figure in Glamorgan cricket, particularly during the period when the club achieved first-class status and entered the County Championship.
Early Life and Pre-First-Class Career Born in Swansea, Glamorgan, Miller was an established cricketer for Glamorgan before the county gained first-class recognition. He played a crucial role in the club's successful minor counties campaigns, which laid the groundwork for their entry into the County Championship.
First-Class Career Miller made his first-class debut for Glamorgan in 1921 at the age of 37, when the county embarked on its inaugural season in the County Championship. Despite his relatively late start to first-class cricket, he quickly proved to be a prolific and consistent wicket-taker. He often opened the bowling for Glamorgan, forming an effective partnership with other key bowlers of the era.
Throughout his first-class career, which spanned from 1921 to 1928, Miller played 101 matches. He took a total of 339 wickets at an average of 25.43. His best bowling figures in an innings were 8 wickets for 55 runs. He notably achieved over 100 wickets in a single season twice, in 1922 and 1925, demonstrating his endurance and skill. In total, he recorded 25 five-wicket hauls and 2 ten-wicket hauls in a match.
While primarily known for his bowling, Miller was also a right-handed batsman who contributed useful runs from the lower order. He scored 1,273 runs in his first-class career at an average of 10.34, with his highest score being 62.
Later Life Frederick Miller played his final first-class match in 1928, retiring from the game at the age of 45. He passed away in Neath, Glamorgan, in 1961 at the age of 77.
