Biography
Frederic Crossley was born in 1870. He received his musical education at the Royal Manchester College of Music, where he studied organ and composition. His talent as an organist quickly became evident, and he gained recognition for his virtuosic playing and command of the instrument.Crossley's career was closely tied to Manchester. He served as the assistant organist at Manchester Cathedral before being appointed the principal organist, a position he held with distinction for many years. During his tenure, he was responsible for the cathedral's music program, including training the choir and performing at numerous services and recitals. He was highly regarded for his ability to improvise and his interpretations of both classical and contemporary organ works.
Beyond his cathedral duties, Crossley was a highly respected educator. He joined the faculty of the Royal Manchester College of Music (now part of the [[Royal Northern College of Music]]) as a professor of organ. In this role, he influenced generations of aspiring organists and musicians, imparting his knowledge of performance technique, repertoire, and music theory.
As a composer, Frederic Crossley contributed to the organ repertoire, producing works that reflected his deep understanding of the instrument. His compositions, though perhaps less widely known today than those of some contemporaries, were performed and appreciated in his time. He also composed anthems and other sacred music for use in church services.
Frederic Crossley passed away in 1948, leaving behind a legacy as a dedicated musician, teacher, and interpreter of organ music.
