Freddy Van Gaever

Freddy Van Gaever (born 12 June 1945) is a Belgian entrepreneur and former politician. He is best known as the founder of the low‑cost airline VLM Airlines and for his service as a member of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives representing the Flemish nationalist party Vlaams Blok (later Vlaams Belang).

Early life and education
Freddy Van Gaever was born in Ghent, Belgium. Information regarding his early education and family background is limited in publicly available sources.

Business career
In the 1970s Van Gaever entered the aviation sector, initially working for Sabena, the former Belgian flag carrier. In 1993 he founded the airline VLM Airlines (originally named “VLM” for “Vlaamse Luchtvaart Maatschappij”), which operated regional and short‑haul services across Europe. Under his leadership, VLM expanded its fleet and route network, focusing on cost‑effective operations. The airline faced financial difficulties in the early 2000s and underwent restructuring; it ultimately ceased operations in 2018. Van Gaever has also been involved in other aviation‑related ventures and business activities, though detailed records of these enterprises are not widely documented.

Political career
Van Gaever entered politics as a member of the Vlaams Blok, a Flemish nationalist party. He was elected to the Belgian Chamber of Representatives in the 1999 federal election and served until 2003. During his parliamentary tenure, he participated in committees related to transport, aviation, and economic affairs. Following the party’s rebranding to Vlaams Belang in 2004, Van Gaever remained associated with the party’s regional activities but did not return to national office.

Later activities and legacy
After leaving the Chamber of Representatives, Van Gaever continued to be active in the aviation industry and maintained a public profile as a commentator on transport policy and regional economic development. He has been recognized within Belgium’s business community for his role in pioneering low‑cost regional air travel, although his ventures have also been subject to criticism concerning financial sustainability.

Personal life
Freddy Van Gaever is married and has children; however, detailed personal information is not extensively covered in public records.
