Fred Jay Seaver (1887 – 1970) was an American mycologist and botanist noted for his extensive work on fungi, particularly the taxonomy and biology of ascomycetes and basidiomycetes.
Early life and education
- Born in 1887 in Southampton, New York, United States.
- Obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from the New York State College of Forestry (now the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry).
- Earned a Ph.D. in botany from Columbia University in 1914, focusing on fungal taxonomy.
Career
- Joined the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) in 1912, eventually becoming the head of the mycological staff.
- Served as Curator of the herbarium and later as Director of the NYBG’s Department of Botany.
- Held the position of Editor-in-Chief of the Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club (now the Journal of the Torrey Botanical Society) from 1924 to 1948.
Research contributions
- Authored the multi‑volume series *The North American Species of the Genus Lycoperdon (1928–1930) and *The North American Species of the Genus Tulostoma (1934–1935), which remain reference works for puffball taxonomy.
- Produced comprehensive treatments of the families Sclerotiniaceae and Discomycetes in the North American Flora series.
- Published over 120 scientific papers on the morphology, life cycles, and classification of fungi, contributing significantly to the modern understanding of fungal systematics.
