Definition
Frechinia is a genus of moths belonging to the family Crambidae, subfamily Odontiinae (tribe Odontiini).
Overview
The genus was established by entomologist Eugene G. Munroe in 1961. Species within Frechinia are primarily distributed in North America, with recorded occurrences ranging from the United States to parts of Canada and Mexico. Members of this genus are small nocturnal lepidopterans, and like other crambid moths, their larvae often feed on herbaceous plants.
Etymology / Origin
The name Frechinia appears to be a coined taxonomic term without a publicly documented linguistic root. In zoological nomenclature, genus names are frequently derived from the surnames of researchers, classical mythology, or arbitrary Latinized forms. The original description by Munroe does not provide an explicit explanation for the etymology, so the precise origin of the name remains unconfirmed.
Characteristics
- Taxonomic Placement: Kingdom Animalia; Phylum Arthropoda; Class Insecta; Order Lepidoptera; Family Crambidae; Subfamily Odontiinae; Tribe Odontiini.
- Species Diversity: Currently recognized species include Frechinia criddlealis, F. helianthiales, F. laetalis, F. lutosalis, and F. texanalis. A former species, F. murmuralis, has been reassigned.
- Morphology: Adults typically possess a wingspan of 8–12 mm, with forewings displaying variable patterns of gray, brown, and white scaling. Detailed wing patterning is used for species identification.
- Life Cycle: Larvae are leaf‑rollers or leaf‑miners on host plants, though host specificity varies among species. Adult flight periods have been recorded from early spring through autumn, depending on locality.
- Distribution: Records indicate presence in western and central United States (e.g., Washington, Oregon, Utah, California, Texas), as well as southern Canadian provinces (e.g., Manitoba) and northern Mexico.
