Frea albicans

Taxonomy

  • Kingdom: Animalia
  • Phylum: Arthropoda
  • Class: Insecta
  • Order: Coleoptera
  • Family: Cerambycidae (longhorn beetles)
  • Genus: Frea
  • Species: Frea albicans

Authority
The species was first described by the French entomologist Louis Alexandre Auguste Chevrolat in 1855.

Description
Frea albicans is a longhorn beetle characterized by a generally pale or whitish‑gray integument, from which its specific epithet “albicans” (Latin for “becoming white”) is derived. Like other members of the genus Frea, it possesses elongated antennae that can exceed the body length in males, and a robust, cylindrical body shape typical of cerambycids. Detailed morphological measurements (e.g., total length, coloration patterns of the elytra) are documented in specialized taxonomic revisions but are not broadly summarized in general reference works.

Distribution and Habitat
The species is known from parts of West and Central Africa. Verified records list occurrence in the following countries:

  • Cameroon
  • Gabon
  • Democratic Republic of the Congo

Typical habitats include tropical and subtropical forested regions where the larvae develop in dead or decaying wood, a common ecological niche for many Cerambycidae.

Ecology
Larval stages are wood‑borers, contributing to the decomposition of dead trees and the recycling of woody material. Adults are often attracted to light and may be observed on vegetation or on dead wood surfaces during the warmer months.

Conservation Status
No specific assessment for Frea albicans has been published by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Consequently, its conservation status is currently unassessed.
