Frank Wartenberg (born 31 March 1955) is a former German track and field athlete who specialised in the long jump and represented East Germany in international competition.
Overview
Wartenberg emerged as a leading long jumper for the German Democratic Republic (GDR) during the late 1970s. He achieved his greatest international success by winning the gold medal in the long jump at the 1977 IAAF World Cup held in Düsseldorf. Domestically, he competed for the sport club SC Dynamo Berlin, which was affiliated with the East German security apparatus. His career-best performance was recorded as 8.13 metres, set in 1978, a mark that placed him among the top European jumpers of his era. After retiring from competition, Wartenberg worked as an athletics coach, contributing to the development of younger German athletes.
Etymology/Origin
The given name Frank derives from the Old Germanic word Franko, meaning “free man” or “a member of the Frankish peoples.” The surname Wartenberg is of German origin, composed of the elements Warte (“watch” or “guard post”) and Berg (“mountain” or “hill”), indicating a possible ancestral tie to a location where a watchtower or guard post stood on a hill.
