Frank H. Eyman (August 1, 1930 – July 1, 2016) was an American football coach who achieved significant recognition for his collegiate coaching career, most notably as the head football coach at the University of Arizona from 1957 to 1968. He is remembered for revitalizing the Arizona football program and for his subsequent roles in professional football.
Early Life and Playing Career Eyman was born in Phoenix, Arizona. He played college football as an end for the University of Arizona, graduating in 1952. After his playing career, he served in the United States Air Force.
Coaching Career
- Early Coaching Roles: Eyman began his coaching career as an assistant coach at several high schools in Arizona. He then joined the University of Arizona coaching staff as an assistant.
- University of Arizona (1957–1968): At the age of 26, Eyman was appointed head coach of the Arizona Wildcats in 1957, becoming one of the youngest head coaches in major college football at the time. During his twelve seasons at the helm, he compiled a record of 51–45–3. His tenure included a notable period of success in the early to mid-1960s, leading the Wildcats to several winning seasons and establishing them as a competitive force in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). He led the team to two Sun Bowl appearances (1964 and 1968), though they lost both games. Eyman resigned after the 1968 season.
- Professional Football: Following his departure from Arizona, Eyman transitioned to professional football. He served as an assistant coach for the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League (NFL) for several seasons (1969–1970) and later with the New York Giants (1974). He also spent time as an assistant coach for the Memphis Southmen of the World Football League (WFL) in 1975.
- Return to College Football: Eyman later returned to the collegiate ranks as an assistant coach, including a stint at Northern Arizona University.
Legacy Frank Eyman played a pivotal role in the history of University of Arizona football, establishing a foundation for future success and creating memorable moments for Wildcats fans during his long tenure. He was inducted into the University of Arizona Sports Hall of Fame.
Death Eyman passed away on July 1, 2016, at the age of 85.
