Francis Ching-wah Yip (Chinese: 葉菁華; born 1967) is a Hong Kong theologian and academic. He serves as director and associate professor of the Divinity School of Chung Chi College (DSCCC) at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).
Biography
Yip attended Christian primary schools and was active in student fellowship during high school. He obtained a Bachelor of Social Science degree, majoring in Journalism, at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Between 1992 and 1995, he studied for a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) at the Divinity School of Chung Chi College. He subsequently received a scholarship to pursue a Doctor of Theology (Th.D.) at Harvard Divinity School, graduating in 2004. His doctoral thesis was later published as a monograph titled Capitalism as Religion? A Study of Paul Tillich's Interpretation of Modernity.
Yip joined the Divinity School of Chung Chi College in 2005 as an assistant professor. In August 2020, he succeeded Ying Fuk-tsang as the Director of the Divinity School of Chung Chi College. He has been nicknamed "Teacher Frog" by his students at the institution.
Academic work and research interests
Yip teaches courses in systematic theology, Christianity and society, and homiletics. His research interests include Hong Kong Christianity, Chinese Protestant theology and practices, and the theology and social thought of Paul Tillich. A common theme across his research is the intersection of theology and society, encompassing topics such as Paul Tillich's critique of capitalism and modernity, Protestant theological discourse in contemporary China, and the social engagement of Hong Kong Christianity.
