Franc' Pairon (1948–2023) was a Belgian fashion designer and a highly influential educator in the field of contemporary fashion. She is widely recognized for her role in establishing and shaping fashion education programs in Europe, particularly within the French-speaking community of Belgium and in France.
In 1986, Pairon founded the fashion design department at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Visuels de La Cambre (commonly known as La Cambre) in Brussels. Under her leadership, the program—known as "Mode(s)"—became a prestigious institution, contributing significantly to the international recognition of Belgian fashion. Her pedagogical approach emphasized creativity, technical rigor, and personal artistic expression, helping to produce several generations of designers who would go on to work for major international fashion houses or establish their own labels.
Following her tenure at La Cambre, Pairon joined the Institut Français de la Mode (IFM) in Paris in 1999. She served as the director of the postgraduate fashion design program until 2012. During her time at IFM, she focused on bridging the gap between creative design and the industrial requirements of the fashion luxury sector.
Pairon’s influence is frequently cited by fashion historians and industry professionals as a key factor in the professionalization of Belgian fashion design. She received various accolades during her career for her contributions to culture and education. She passed away on February 12, 2023.
