Fort Logan H. Roots

Fort Logan H. Roots is a historic former United States Army post located in North Little Rock, Arkansas. Established in the late 19th century, it served various military purposes before being transferred to the Veterans Administration (now Department of Veterans Affairs) and becoming a significant medical center for veterans in the region.

History

The origins of Fort Logan H. Roots trace back to the efforts of Arkansas Congressman Logan H. Roots, who advocated for the establishment of a military post in Arkansas. Congress authorized the post in 1890, and construction began in 1893 on a site overlooking the Arkansas River, approximately five miles north of Little Rock. The post was officially named "Fort Roots" in honor of Logan H. Roots upon its completion in 1896, shortly after his death.

Initially, Fort Roots served as a small garrison post, primarily housing infantry and cavalry units. Its early role included preparing troops for the Spanish-American War in 1898. During this period, it provided training grounds and logistical support.

World War I and Interwar Period

With the advent of World War I, Fort Roots saw significant expansion and a shift in its mission. It became a recruit depot, processing thousands of soldiers for service overseas. Barracks, training facilities, and support buildings were added to accommodate the increased personnel. After the war, the post continued to operate but at a reduced capacity, serving as a training camp and a storage facility for military supplies.

World War II and Deactivation

During World War II, Fort Roots once again played a crucial role. It functioned as a major induction and processing center for new recruits, handling their initial medical examinations, paperwork, and basic training before they were assigned to other posts or deployed. The post was bustling throughout the war years, but its military utility began to decline in the post-war era as military strategy and base requirements evolved.

The U.S. Army officially deactivated Fort Logan H. Roots in 1946.

Transformation into a Veterans Administration Facility

Following its deactivation as an active military post, the facility was transferred to the Veterans Administration (VA) in 1946. It was repurposed as the "Veterans Administration Hospital, North Little Rock Division." Over the decades, the historic buildings were adapted and new medical facilities were constructed to serve the healthcare needs of veterans.

Current Status

Today, the former Fort Logan H. Roots is a prominent component of the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS). It operates as a major VA medical center, providing a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services, including mental health, geriatrics, rehabilitation, and long-term care, for veterans across Arkansas and surrounding states. While its military functions have ceased, the site continues its legacy of service through veteran care. Several of the original 19th-century buildings still stand, serving as administrative offices or adapted for clinical use, blending historical architecture with modern healthcare infrastructure.
