Forécariah Prefecture

Forécariah Prefecture is an administrative division of the Republic of Guinea, situated in the western part of the country within the Kindíá Region. Its administrative capital is the town of Forécariah.

Geography
The prefecture covers an area of approximately 4,300 km², characterized by a mix of coastal plains, forested interior, and a network of rivers, including tributaries of the Rio Pongo. It borders the Atlantic Ocean to the southwest, the Sierra Leonean border to the south, Boffa Prefecture to the west, and Kindíá and Boffa Prefectures to the north and east, respectively.

Administrative Subdivisions
Forécariah Prefecture is divided into a number of sub‑prefectures (arrondissements), each headed by a sub‑prefect. The principal sub‑prefectures include:

  • Forécariah‑Centre (the urban centre)
  • Benty
  • Darsalam
  • Kakossa
  • Koundara
  • Manéah
  • Souguéta
  • Talataye
  • Yendé

(The exact number and names of sub‑prefectures may vary according to administrative reforms; current official listings provide eight to ten sub‑prefectures.)

Demographics
According to Guinea’s 2014 national census, Forécariah Prefecture had a recorded population of 242,903 inhabitants. The population is ethnically diverse, with the majority belonging to the Fulani (Peul), Malinké, and Susu groups. Languages commonly spoken include French (the official language), Pular, Malinké, and Susu.

Economy
The local economy is predominantly agrarian. Key agricultural products are rice, cassava, groundnuts, palm oil, and cash crops such as cashew nuts and cocoa. Small‑scale mining, particularly of iron ore deposits in the interior, also contributes to economic activity, though commercial extraction remains limited. Trade across the border with Sierra Leone is facilitated by informal markets in the town of Forécariah.

Infrastructure
Transportation infrastructure includes a regional road network linking Forécariah to Kindíá, Boffa, and the coastal city of Conakry. The prefecture lacks a commercial airport; the nearest international facility is Conakry International Airport, approximately 150 km to the east. Health and education services are provided by a combination of government‑run facilities and non‑governmental organizations.

History
Forécariah Prefecture was established as part of Guinea’s post‑independence administrative reorganization, which created the current system of regions and prefectures. Specific dates of its creation are not uniformly documented; however, the prefecture has existed in its present form since at least the early 1970s.
